HERE’S a yarn from the annals of Bulli’s old Denmark Hotel.
The pub traded on the NSW South Coast from 1877 to 1911.
On Boxing Day 1901, the local member of parliament, John Barnes Nicholson “dropped” into the the pub – then known as the Tourist Hotel – for a ‘refreshment’ or two on his way to a local sporting fixture.
Thirst quenched, Mr Nicholson met a nasty accident after leaving the pub. Someone – hopefully not a political rival – had left the cellar door open, and as a consequence, the MP for Woronora had an embarrassing tumble onto the beer casks below.
The South Coast Times reported the incident on January 5, 1901:
Mr. J. B. Nicholson, M.L.A. is still confined to his room by the effects of his fall on Boxing Day. He fell sheer through an open trap door while going out of the Tourist Hotel, into which he had called on his way to the sports, and hurt a leg severely on the casks below.
