Sydney’s early ‘growlers’ were a little expensive compared to tap beer

bottled schooner beerBUYING beer in schooners and middies in Sydney hotels and then bottling it yourself is an expensive way of buying it, although not illegal, provided you pour the beer into the bottle yourself.

To the right is a bottle containing 3 ULVA middies of draught beer – cost 1/9 [One shilling and nine pence]. It is only partly filled. Brewery bottled beer, (NSW), filled to the dotted line, costs 1/7½ [one shilling and seven and a half pence] a bottle.

  • Middie holds a little less than the 9 oz. content of schooners used in Perth. Price of bottled beer here is 1/9.
