480 GALLONS OF BEER IN 12 DAYS
WOLLONGONG, Monday: The 15 Corrimal miners who are trying to establish a beer-drinking record have drunk 480 gallons of beer and 360 bottles of lemonade and ginger beer in 12 days.
They are members of the Save Yourself Club, and are camped on Towradgi Beach. Their beer marathon is an annual event.
Last year they consumed only 220 gallons of beer. Up till last Saturday the men had drunk 230 gallons, and were then aiming at reaching the 400 mark by January 8, when their holiday ends. But in a hectic weekend of festivity the consumption rate was doubled. They consumed 260 gallons of beer, and numerous cases, of soft drinks.
‘JUST ORDINARY DRINKING’
“That is just ordinary drinking for a miner,” said the organiser and founder of the club (Mr. Pat Curran) today.
The men are pleased with the statements of Dr. Macquarie, Sunday Telegraph medical man. He said that a gallon and a quarter of beer a day might be a lot for a sedentary worker, but not for a miner. He also said it would probably have no ill-effect on them.
‘MUST UNDERSTAND MINERS’
A member of the club said today: “It is not always we get a medical man to agree with us on the liquor question.
“Dr. Macquarie must be well versed in the ways of miners’ generally.”
Yesterday, police inspected the camp. They reported it as well conducted and the men well behaved. The highlight of yesterday’s proceedings was a ‘march past’ in single file. Led by Pat Curran, the men tried to walk the ‘dotted’ line.
