THE old Royal Hotel at West Maitland was established in 1872. However, the former pub is much older, built in the 1840s as Dickson’s general store.
First licensed in 1872 by Henry Hook, and known as Hook’s Family Hotel, it later became the Excelsior, and finally the Royal Hotel.
Sadly the historic business sold its last beer in 1983, when it traded as the Royal Hotel.

Mr. Frank Hinchey, the popular manager of Bickerton’s Royal Hotel, opposite the Town Hall, West Maitland intimates by advertisement in this issue that first-class accommodation may be procured there for travellers at a tariff of 6 shillings per day with a liberal induction for boarders. All drinks are kept on ice, and Tooth’s draught ale, Resch’s lager and C.B. bottled ales, with the best wines are on sale by glass or bottle. A counter lunch is provided daily.
