Champion cask roller

Peter McKechnieMEET the 1953 South Australian cask ‘walking’ champion, Peter McKechnie. Weighing-in at 15 stone, 10 pound, 38-year-old Peter took out the title by walking a 150 pound wine barrel down the main street of Nuriootpa. But that wasn’t the first time he’d won a cask walking competition. His first success was in 1941 when he was first home at the Liquor Trades’ picnic. He also won the cask walking event at the Labor Day sports at Glenelg on three occasions. Peter had plenty of practice moving barrels in his employment as assistant transport officer at the West End Brewery.
