THE Deakin Inn was opened by brewery giant, Toohey’s Limited as a pub and motel on April 9, 1968. The pub had a short trading life, and seems to have closed by the 1990s. According to Tooth & Company brewery’s yellow cards, Toohey’s sold the pub to the “Government of the Peoples Republic of China” in 1979! The pub was located on Kent Street, Deakin, between Deakin High School and the Deakin Bowling Club.

Pub Tab successful
By JOHN HOURIGAN, Sports Editor
The ‘Pub Tab’ operation introduced at the Deakin Inn yesterday was an outstanding success according to hotel manager, Mr Ken King.
He said the machine worked perfectly and was readily accepted by punters. 185 transactions were handled, involving bets of 50c and up to $100.
The largest payout on the day was $240 and he estimated that the ACT TAB ‘lost’ $11 on the day.
“From my point of view I am extremely happy with the machine and the service brought more and new customers into the Punters Bar”, he said.
