Circus chimpanzee, Lu-lu turned a few heads when she dropped into a Newcastle pub for a refreshing beer in 1959.
While the circus was visiting the NSW steel-town, Lu-lu was photographed by the local newspaper enjoying “a friendly drop of beer” with Tom Elliott.
The Newcastle Morning Herald reported on May 9, 1959 that Lu-lu was a polite animal: “She shakes hands with men, and for women she bows gallantly and kisses their hands. Aged three, she does an acrobatic act, including loop-the-loop. In Europe, she swallowed a piece of metal, which was recovered by surgeons by making an incision in her side.”
