TRAGIC DEATH OF YOUNG MARRIED WOMAN
Gloom was cast over the whole of Gulgong (NSW) last Friday when it was reported that Mrs Myra Herrick, wife of Mr Ron Herrick, was found dead at the rear of the Commercial Hotel, Gulgong. The discovery was made about 6.10am, and it is presumed that she fell from a window on the first floor. It is believed that she received head injuries, which probably caused her death. Sergeant Southern (Gulgong), assisted by Sergeant Cook (Mudgee), is investigating, it is understood an inquest will shortly be held. The deceased, who was 31 years of age, leaves a husband and one son to mourn their loss, and to these and all relations deepest sympathy is extended. The funeral took place at Orange last Saturday afternoon.

The Gulgong Pioneer Museum tells Time Gents that there were in fact three Commercial Hotels in Gulgong at one time! How confusing for pub historians!!
The existing Commercial Hotel was built 1912/13 and began operating as Powell’s Hotel soon after completion. The Gulgong Champion reported on July 19 1913:
Powell’s Hotel
The Old and the New
The old building is fast disappearing and in its place a commodious two storied brick structure is nearing completion – the only two storey hotel in Gulgong. It will be replete in every way for the confort of the travelling public, and when finished it will rank with the best hotels outside of the Metropolis.
