A PUB has traded at the corner of Broadway and Abercrombie Street, in Sydney’s Chippendale, since 1843.
The current art deco pub opened in 1938 to replace a previous structure, built in 1911. The Australian Hotel was one of four originally included in the old Tooth and Company Brewery site, which later became Carlton United Brewery in the mid 1980s.

The pub’s name changed to the Abercrombie Hotel in 2011 when it was a popular late night music venue. The Abercrombie Hotel closed for business in 2014, and reopened in December 2022.
The pub had been out of operation for two years when Solotel announced in 2016 big plans for the building.
Solotel, headed by chef Matt Moran and hotelier Bruce Solomon, planned to restore the iconic pub and reopen it in 2018. Three terrace houses, which are part of the property, will were converted into a European-style wine bar.
