THE Australian Hotel traded at the corner of Broadway and Abercrombie Street, in Sydney’s Chippendale for over a century.
The art deco corner pub replaced a previous hotel, built in 1911, in 1938. The Australian Hotel was one of four originally included in the old Tooth and Company Brewery site, which later became Carlton United Brewery in the mid 1980s.

The name was later changed to the Abercrombie Hotel when it was host to a “motley crew” of Fairfax journalists and Carlton United Brewery staff, before closing in 2014.
The landmark building had been out of operation for two years when Solotel announced big plans for the building, which is expected to reopen as a gastro pub in 2018.
Solotel, headed by Australian chef Matt Moran and hotelier Bruce Solomon, plan to restore the iconic pub. Three terrace houses, which are part of the property, will be converted into a European-style wine bar.
