Brisbane drinkers toast the barman after 1949 ‘beer drought’ comes to an end

The toast of these drinkers was “cheers for the barman” when beer came on in Brisbane hotels after a long drought due to a brewery strike in 1949.

The Brisbane Telegraph reported on August 15 1949 that there were few customers in most city bars at 10am, “as most people did not expect the beer to come on until late this afternoon”.
