IT could only happen in Melbourne. The Victorian branch of the ULVA has ordered its members not to serve counter lunches*.
More than 50 city and suburban publicans openly flouted the ban today, ordering large stocks of sandwiches. Stated opinion of the “rebels” is that counter lunch is a service customers want. Sydney publicans, please note!

* Melbourne’s publicans supplied free sandwhiches and other food on their bars during these times to entice drinkers to their pubs at lunch time. The United Liquor Victuallers Association, the forerunner to the Australian Hotel’s Association fought a long campaign for publicans to stop providing the free food, which sent many pubs to the wall in the battle to provide the best lunch time tucker…
