A ONE legged barman was charged with stealing £142 from a pub in an inner seaside suburb of Melbourne in 1952.
The Melbourne Age reported that the employee was detained by police at St Kilda on January 20 1952 on suspicion of stealing the money from the Village Belle Hotel.
The Village Belle Hotel, established in 1891, continues to trade at 202 Barkly Street St Kilda (2022).
After police unsuccessfully searched his clothing, one officer decided to take a closer look at his wooden leg, discovering the stolen sum of money in a cavity!
Bingo! The 38-year-old man was charged with theft, and likely found it difficult to work behind a bar again!
