Wharfies at Sydney’s Harbour View Hotel insisted on fresh flowers in the bar every day

WHO would have thought? The wharfies who frequented the Harbour View Hotel in the shadow of the Sydney Harbour Bridge at Millers Point during the early 1950s insisted on having fresh flowers in the bar every day – and, as any good publican would do – host, Jean Crocker happily obliged. The picture above, along with the following caption, appeared in the Sydney Daily Telegraph on Sunday August 24 1952:

DREAMY-EYED with ecstasy, wharfie Gus Girdler, of Stanmore, savours the delicate fragrance of a daffodil in the ‘Blue Room’ of the Harbour View Hotel. His fellow flower-lovers are ex-middleweight-champion-now-wharfie Jack Haines (left) and George Olson, of Belmore. Watching the trio is Jean Crocker, wife of the hotel licensee. Wharfies who drink at the pub have insisted on the licensee buying fresh flowers daily for their favourite bar.
