SYDNEY publican William Ryan seems to have a penchant for historic, landmark inner-city hotels.
Ryan has bought one of the oldest pubs in Newtown. He has taken the reins of the King Street institution, Kuleto’s Bar, sold by Donna Asensio late last year after 43 years of ownership.
Ryan says the hotel will revert to the Milton Hotel moniker, and offer a local neighbourhood hotel experience.
The well-known publican has a strong history in the inner-city; he lives locally, and was at the helm of the Harold Park Hotel, Glebe, for the past 12 years, and the Cauliflower Hotel, Waterloo, for the previous 10. He is one of Australia’s few fifth generation publicans and has plans to re-establish the old Kuleto’s site as a friendly local watering hole.
“The Milton will open ‘pub hours’ and also continue its traditional late trading (Currently licensed until 3am) and bringing in an offering of food and entertainment, over its three level footprint,” Ryan told Time Gents.
“It has an undiscovered rooftop, and will also have a function space, rekindling the old Politics in the Pub, Poets in the Pub, comedy, amongst many others.”
For the history buffs, the site opened as the Hampton Court Hotel in 1875, renamed, Milton Hotel in December 1885, and branded Kuleto’s in the late 1980s. It is believed to be Newtown’s second oldest watering hole, after Coopers Hotel, established as the Shakespeare in 1874, and pipping the Carlyle Castle Hotel for the title by a few months.
Although there a number of Newtown pubs older than the Milton Hotel, they have since been demolished and rebuilt. The Milton, like Coopers and Carlyle Castle remain in their original structures, built in the 1870s.
Ryan says he looks forward to joining the King Street community and welcoming old and new customers.
